In-Lab Data Recovery Service Process

There are two major components of the Ontrack Data Recovery in-lab service:

1. Media Evaluation

The evaluation process starts upon receipt of the media in one of our worldwide data recovery labs. First, the team of cleanroom engineers evaluates the media for physical or electrical failures. Once the engineering team has determined the nature of the failure, a plan is developed and executed to extract the raw data from the storage device. This plan often includes temporary repairs in order to make the media accessible or operational. If the media is operational, the Kroll Ontrack team will move right into phase two.

This phase of the evaluation process is critical to get right the first time because there may be only one chance to extract the data from the storage device. An inexperienced technician or data recovery provider can make the data unrecoverable.

2. Data assembly and repair

Once the raw data is extracted from the physical media, it needs to be re-assembled into an organized file and folder arrangement so that you will be able to access your files in the locations where they used to reside.

A lab specialist examines the logical file system and performs an evaluation to determine what files are recoverable. Kroll Ontrack uses a variety of engineering methods to recover your data. At the end of this phase of the evaluation, a list of recoverable files is generated and provided to the customer. If there are damaged or unrecoverable files, this information will also be provided to the customer.

The customer then has the opportunity to review the list of recoverable files and the condition of the recovered data. If the customer elects to proceed with the recovery, the files are then copied to your choice of media.
