Ontrack introduces commercial version of Ontrack Y2K advisor hardware diagnostic software

ONTRACK Data International, Inc. (Nasdaq: ONDI), the world leader in data recovery services, now offers an enhanced version of its Ontrack Y2K Advisor diagnostic software tailored for commercial users. Previously only available as a single PC version through the Ontrack Web site, the new commercial version of Ontrack Y2K Advisor is designed for consultants and organizations faced with verifying the Y2K compliance of multiple PCs. According to Ben Allen, product line manager for Ontrack, “Our initial version (now free trial), of Ontrack Y2K Advisor continues to be extremely popular, but feedback from consultants and administrators told us they needed something more. The commercial version of the software incorporates features required by people who deal with more than a handful of PCs.”
Ontrack Y2K Advisor determines whether a computer's Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) firmware and Real Time Clock (RTC) will roll over from December 31, 1999 to January 1, 2000. When users shut down their system, the date is maintained in the RTC which also resides at the hardware level, but is battery powered. Most Intel-based RTCs are not Year 2000 compliant, but the BIOS should make the appropriate adjustment when the system is booted up. However, in rare situations where a software application reads the date from the RTC, a computer's data could become corrupted when the year 2000 arrives.
The commercial version of Ontrack Y2K Advisor includes reporting features, such as consolidated test results and PC inventory reports, that are important for network administrators and consultants. Consolidated reporting provides a comprehensive overview for organizations with many machines to test. The report can be imported into a variety of applications or into the pre-built Microsoft Access database that is shipped with the Commercial version of Ontrack Y2K Advisor.
The PC Inventory report captures vital information for each PC, including:
  • Processor Make (Genuine Intel, AMD, etc.)
  • Processor Type (Pentium, Pentium II, etc.)
  • Conventional Memory
  • Extended Memory
  • Total Hard Disk Count
  • Total Available Hard Disk Space
  • Total Free Space
  • Primary Operating System
  • File System for Boot Partition (FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, etc)
  • BIOS Manufacturer
  • BIOS Release Date
The commercial software sells for $20 per ten-unit license pack for users evaluating up to 1000 PCs. Those interested in testing more that 1000 PCs should contact Ontrack directly for volume discount at 800-872-2599 or visit the Ontrack web site at: www.ontrack.com.
