Ontrack introduces DataEraser software for PC protection

ONTRACK Data International, Inc. (NASDAQ: ONDI), a leading provider of data availability software and service solutions, today announced the release of DataEraser ™ V2.0, a data-scrubbing software program designed to completely erase a personal computer's hard disk of all data.
As PC users upgrade to newer, faster computers and send their obsolete systems to new owners or the dumpster, crucial information often goes along with the ride - from work projects and personal finances to love letters, e-mail messages, records of frequently visited Web sites and more. Before selling or donating old personal computers, Ontrack advises that users take extra precautions to make sure the PC hard drive is truly erased. Otherwise, confidential or embarrassing information may be shared with the PC's new owner.
“Data saved to your hard drive remains on the drive even after it is deleted, sent to the Recycle Bin or after the drive is re-formatted or re-partitioned. Deletion or re-formatting typically means that the operating system no longer has access to the data, not that the actual information has been removed,” said Jim Reinert, director of worldwide software for Ontrack. “DataEraser allows safe recycling of hard drive media by overwriting all of the data on a drive including boot records, partitions, folders and files.”
According to Adam W. Couture, senior analyst with desktop management services of GartnerGroup/Dataquest, “Businesses today are waking up to the importance of properly disposing or redeploying unused PC assets. The potential is that critical corporate information could be compromised unless old PCs are properly ‘scrubbed' before being sold or handed over to another employee."
DataEraser is available in two versions -Professional and Personal. The Professional Version is designed for the following:
1. A computer IT professional who is responsible for preparing corporate PCs for PC refresh, PC redeploy, charitable donation, asset disposal or lease return.
2. A computer VAR, integrator, service or repair technician who prepares client PCs for all of the reasons listed above.
3. A PC leasing or recycling center that recycles hard disk drives from one customer to another.
The Personal Version of DataEraser is designed for a home PC user who is donating, selling or discarding a personal computer.
DataEraser is operating system independent and is compatible with any PC with a 386 or greater processor and 8 MB of RAM. Other system requirements include: 1.44 MB floppy diskette drive, EGA 640 x 480 or above graphics, and SCSI or ATA/IDE (EIDE/Fast-ATA) hard drives that are attached in common controller methods.
DataEraser Personal Version, recommended for home users, is currently available for $29.95 and DataEraser Professional Version, recommended for field technicians, is available for $199.95. Both can be purchased at or by calling 800-872-2599. DataEraser Site Licensing is also recommended for corporate IT professionals and is available by calling 800-872-2599.
