Ontrack announces availability of automated backup solution for desktops and laptops

ONTRACK Data International, Inc., (NASDAQ: ONDI), a leading provider of data availability software and service solutions, today announced the availability of RapidRecall?, an automated personal computer backup solution for local and remote desktop and laptop systems. RapidRecall is designed to increase control of data distributed among users in an organization, reduce PC downtime and further protect a company's intellectual property.

“A company's data availability strategy for laptop and desktop PCs requires backup and restore solutions; file management, diagnostic and repair software; and do-it-yourself data recovery options, all backed by industry-leading remote and in-lab data recovery capabilities,” said Mike Rogers, Ontrack CEO. “With the introduction of RapidRecall, customers can improve uptime and simplify processes by getting all data availability needs from a single source.” RapidRecall features advanced data and system protection capabilities for repairing, restoring and backing up distributed desktop and laptop computers across the Internet or corporate Local Area Network (LAN). With RapidRecall, users can fix configuration problems, repair damaged files and restore systems automatically with little or no help required from the IT staff. RapidRecall also improves online management capabilities of remote PCs for IT administrators.

Prior to RapidRecall, users were typically instructed to copy important files to the network or removable media, such as zip disks. However, these methods are not automated, not always followed by users and provide no user or IT control. Now, using network-efficiency and compression technologies, RapidRecall provides the means to deliver fast, efficient, secure and non-network intrusive backups on a regular basis.

“Protecting PC data, including personal files and configuration settings, is becoming increasingly important, particularly as corporate America continues to embrace notebook computers with docking stations as the platform of choice,” said Adam Couture, senior analyst at Gartner Group's Dataquest. “Although many hardware service and support providers offer next-day notebook replacement service anywhere in the country, they do not replace user files – the main reason road warriors lug their systems from airport to airport.”

RapidRecall is designed to protect user data and configuration settings and transfer a minimum amount of data over the network during each backup cycle. Available in both software-only and ASP versions, RapidRecall includes the following features:
  • Point-in-Time Repair™ — Allows users to restore their data, configuration or application to any point in time prior to data loss or corruption.

  • SendOnce™ — Automatically compares user files with others already stored on the server, which saves time by eliminating the need to backup identical files that are part of the “redundant file template”.

  • Delta Block™ — Enables backups of only the portion of the file that has actually changed and reduces the amount of data that needs to be transferred by 95 percent.

  • File Compression — Reduces the amount of data to be sent over the network and can deliver up to an additional 50 percent reduction in data transferred.

  • Intelligent Timing — Eliminates network bottlenecks by allowing administrators to control when RapidRecall users backup during the scheduled time ranges.

  • Additional Benefits — RapidRecall also includes direct access to Ontrack Remote Data Recovery? engineers and discounts on Ontrack data recovery services and select Ontrack software utility programs.
Based on Connected Corporation's Connected Network Backup technology, RapidRecall supports Microsoft Windows 95, 98, NT and 2000 client operating systems and Microsoft NT 4.0 Server, Microsoft IIS and Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 server software programs. RapidRecall requires the addition of Pentium-based server, RAID-5 disk array and DLT or AIT tape libraries and a client software program on each protected PC.

RapidRecall is currently available at www.ontrack.com or by calling 800-645-3649.
