Ontrack delivers help for computer users attacked by the CIH (Chernobyl) virusWith the CIH virus again affecting thousands of computer users across the globe, ONTRACK Data International, Inc. (NASDAQ: ONDI), a leading provider of data availability software and service solutions, announced immediate availability of data recovery remedies for the CIH virus, also known as the Chernobyl virus. The company is offering three different solutions ¡X EasyRecovery„§ ¡§do-it-yourself¡¨ data recovery software, in-lab data recovery services and Remote Data Recovery„§ services. Information on these solutions is available at www.ontrack.com.
¡§We have the technology that allows us to recapture the portions of the system's data that were destroyed by the CIH virus,¡¨ said Jim Reinert, director of worldwide software for Ontrack. ¡§It should never be assumed that lost data is unrecoverable, because in most cases, data recovery is possible. The most important thing to remember is not to panic.¡¨
Originally discovered in June 1998, the CIH virus contains malicious code that is activated on the 26th day of each month, appearing in its most widespread form on April 26, 1999, and again today. ¡§The number of calls coming into some of our data recovery labs across the world has doubled today, due to the CIH virus,¡¨ said Reinert.
Ontrack data recovery engineers have seen the CIH virus attack systems in two different ways . In the first way, the virus attempts to flash overwrite the basic input/output system (BIOS) memory. If the virus successfully executes this payload, the computer will be unbootable, but the data on the hard drive is recoverable. In the second way, the virus destroys critical data on the hard drive. At this point, the hard drive in not accessible and a data recovery method is necessary to restore access to user files.
Information about the CIH virus will be updated regularly on the Ontrack Web site at www.ontrack.com.
