Ontrack announces availability of first “do-it-yourself” data recovery software specifically for “I Love You” worm— ONTRACK Data International, Inc. (NASDAQ: ONDI), a leading provider of data availability software and service solutions, announced today that it is releasing the first “do-it-yourself” data recovery solution for data lost as a result of the VBS.LoveLetter worm.
When a user opens the attachment, the worm spreads by e-mailing itself to every person or destination in the user's various address books, including any corporate distribution lists. The program also deletes files with the following extensions: .VBS, .VBE, .JS, .JSE, .CSS, .WSH, .SCT, .HTA, .JPG, .JPEG, .MP3 and .MP2. In addition the worm modifies the Windows Registry and changes the user's Internet start page to one of four Web pages hosted by skyinet.net, a Philippines-based Internet service provider.
The volume of people affected by the VBS.LoveLetter worm pointed to the need for a “do-it-yourself” solution. “Ontrack recognized the need to create EasyRecovery™ for VBS.LoveLetter Worm, a safe “do-it-yourself” software option for customers infected by the worm,” said Jim Reinert, Ontrack director of worldwide software.
Ontrack engineers have been working around the clock to develop a solution to recover music and graphics files lost by the worm, which infected many computers yesterday. “Due to the complexities of this worm and the way in which it travels, we saw the need to offer technically savvy customers a 'do-it-yourself' solution,” added Reinert. As part of the Ontrack EasyRecovery product line, this “do-it-yourself”, same day recovery solution, is available for $49. The EasyRecovery solution helps users recover JPEG, JPG, MP3 and MP2 files on Win95, Win98 and WinNT systems.
Unlike some recovery utilities, which put data at risk by attempting to repair and rewrite the corruptions on the original drive, this software never writes on the original drive and its evaluations are non-invasive, thereby offering continuous protection of the original data.
When a suspected data loss occurs, the user can download the “do-it-yourself” recovery tool from the Ontrack Web site (www.ontrack.com) and automatically create the EasyRecovery diskette. Before beginning the recovery process, the user should first use commercial anti-virus software, like Ontrack SystemSuite™ 2000 or Fix-It Utilities™ 2000 to clean the VBS.LoveLetter worm from the system. The user then reboots the computer with the diskette, runs EasyRecovery and selects the volume to recover. Next the program will extract all JPEG, JPG, MP3 and MP2 files that can be found to a destination path selected by the user. The files will be available as F####### .JPEG, .JPG, .MP3 or .MP2.
“The success rate will vary depending on the fragmentation of the hard disk and the size of the files to be recovered,” said Reinert. “The less fragmented the hard disk and the smaller the files, the higher the success rate.”
Technical information and detailed operating instructions for EasyRecovery for VBS.LoveLetter Worm are on the Ontrack Web site, www.ontrack.com.
