Kroll Ontrack acquires Engenium Corporation, owners of patented conceptual search technology
Provides full control of sophisticated semantic analysis technology in Ontrack® Inview™ and other applications
Minneapolis – November 20, 2006 – Kroll Ontrack, the industry’s largest provider of electronic and paper-based document discovery and computer forensic services, today announced the acquisition of Engenium. Based in Dallas, Texas, Engenium is a leader and pioneer in intelligent search and search-related products. This acquisition signals Kroll Ontrack's continued commitment to advancing technology that addresses the growing demand for cost-effective methods to locate relevant information from large volumes of data in support of investigations, litigation and regulatory compliance matters. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Originating three years ago with a technology licensing partnership, this union strengthens Kroll Ontrack's position as the preeminent leader in the electronic discovery space. Engenium's technology enhances the search capabilities of Ontrack® Inview™, the company's award-winning review tool, by providing both concept searching and topic review features that produce time and cost savings for electronic discovery clients.
“ Engenium's award-winning technology is a strong complement to our online document review tool and brings immediate benefits to clients by allowing them and their legal advisors to more quickly identify information relevant to a legal matter,” said Ben Allen, president of Kroll Ontrack. “In addition, combining the complementary engineering know-how of the two organizations will allow us to bring innovative new solutions to market in the future .”
Incorporating a full range of search capabilities in its patented and award-winning Semetric® product and more recently released Autometric™ product, Engenium enables easier and faster searches for commercial, legal and government organizations by retrieving information based on meaning, not just keyword matches. Specific benefits include: faster searches, more precise and intelligent results, fewer non-relevant hits, and the clustering of related information without the aid of human judgment.
"The combination of Kroll Ontrack's market position and Engenium's expertise and entrepreneurial spirit will enable us to supply our customers with solutions that meet their greatest needs and demands," said Dave Chaplin, president of Engenium. "We look forward to leveraging Kroll Ontrack’s cutting-edge tools and leadership to take the combined organization to the next level."
"I am pleased with the outcome of the investment and excited to see Engenium take their technology to new heights with the resources available to them through Kroll," says Dan Patterson of Transition Capital Partners, Engenium's largest investor. "We are thankful to the management team for working so hard to achieve this remarkable success."
Engenium will continue to operate its Dallas office as part of Kroll Ontrack's worldwide operations. As integration work gets underway, Kroll Ontrack will explore expanding its technology services to markets with similar search applications, which already have proven to be successful for Engenium.
