Ontrack receives groundbreaking patent for compression technologyAugust 2, 1999 - ONTRACK Data International, Inc. (NASDAQ: ONDI), a leading provider of data availability software and service solutions, announced today that it received patent number 5,907,703 from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, granted on May 25, 1999. The patent covers device driver technology for on-the-fly data compression and decompression. Inventors of the patent are Pierre-Michel Kronenberg and Derek Zahn, both with Mijenix, which was recently acquired by Ontrack.
The process of compressing and decompressing computer files saves storage space and promotes faster transfer via the Internet. The patented technology lets users work with compressed file archives without going through the tedious steps of manually compressing or decompressing the file archives. This patented technology is currently marketed under the Ontrack® product name of Mijenix Dynamic File System Enhancement ™ (DFSE). It already has been implemented in two Ontrack products: Mijenix™ ZipMagic® 98 and Mijenix FreeSpace™.
“Compression technology has become ubiquitous as needs for more efficient file transport have increased,” said Michael Rogers, Ontrack CEO. “We see several possible applications for improving computer user productivity.”
Deployment Opportunities for DFSE Technology
DFSE on-the-fly compression technology could potentially be deployed in a variety of areas, including:
- Local Area Network and Wide Area Network bandwidth increases through compression of server data.
- Data transfer speed increases for thin clients and low-bandwidth devices.
- The addition to “uninstall” and backup products (keeping files accessible but using minimum space).
- Increasing user hard drive space.
- Implementation into standard compression formats such as Zip, RAR and LZH.
- Increasing removable media capacity.
“Technically, this patent means that Ontrack has an extraordinary edge in the file compression field,” said Mike Kronenberg, chief technology officer of Ontrack and a co-inventor of the patent. “We are excited about what this means for the company, the industry, and to the ultimate beneficiary, the user.”
